Tell it Tuesday w/ B.Parker: The Real Meaning of Christmas

We are now days away from Christmas. The time of the year where we celebrate the birth of Jesus, exchange gifts, shop until we don’t ever want to see another store again, and our towns are lit with bright lights.

This is also the time of the year where we sometimes forget the true meaning of this season in the midst of all the red and green, and decorated trees.

The holidays can become so hectic that we forget to sit down, and really think about the reason we’re celebrating in the first place.

Luke 2: 15-18 As the angel choir withdrew into heaven, the sheepherders talked it over. “Let’s get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us.”

As a child it’s easy to connect Christmas with presents. But it’s very important to remember that this season is not about tangible gifts, but it’s about the amazing gift that was brought to us on that starry night. God revealed to us an amazing gift that isn’t found under a Christmas tree once a year. It’s a gift that we’re given every single day, 365 days of the year. A gift that honestly keeps on giving.

Luke 2:17-20 “They left, running, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. Seeing was believing. They told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child. All who heard the sheep herders were impressed. Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself. The sheep herders returned and let loose, glorifying and praising God for everything they had heard and seen. It turned out exactly the way they’d been told!”

And a  child was born, and that child grew up to be the man who would die for your sins. That baby changed everything. From the moment that He was brought into this world, everything changed.

Christmas is an amazing time of the year to spend time with family, and create memories.

There is nothing wrong with gifts but remember that it’s better to give than to receive. Also remember that the true gift is not something wrapped under the tree, but instead is Jesus Christ.

So when you see your town lit up in red and green, remember the reason for the season. See the red as the blood that was shed for you, and the green as the life that you were given because of it.

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year, but don’t forget the true meaning behind it all.
